Definition of term
A flood certification determines whether a property is in a flood zone. There are two ways to obtain flood certification: a licensed surveyor or the FEMA website. Licensed surveyors will visit the property and use GPS equipment to determine its flood zone designation. The FEMA website provides an online tool that allows users to input their address and receive flood certification information. Flood certification is generally valid for four years, after which the holder must renew it. Properties that have been flood certified are typically required to carry flood insurance.
