Homeowners Association (HOA)
Definition of term
A homeowners association (HOA) is a legal entity created by a group of homeowners. The HOA manages and maintains common areas and property within a subdivision, planned community, or condo development. A set of covenants, conditions, and restrictions (CC&Rs) govern the association. These CC&Rs may include the types of dwellings permitted, minimum and maximum square footage requirements, landscaping guidelines, and architectural standards. A board of directors who the homeowners elect within the community manages the HOA. The board is responsible for enforcing the CC&Rs.
